If you are in a quandry over how to test the performance of your computer network you're in luck. A little research lead me to an amazing set of tools online availabe to everyone as a free service. You can pretty much measure or analyze anything broadband related with the tools provided via the online techie community forum at SpeedGuide.net. Whatever it is you need to look at.....performance or design related.....you can get it done with the free SpeedGuide tools. Nice little resource you should take advantage of.

Here's a list of what they have available to you:

* SG TCP/IP Analyzer

The SpeedGuide TCP/IP Analyzer is a program designed to display your Internet connection parameters, extracted directly from TCP packets sent by your browser to their server. The Analyzer program then displays recommendations based on the settings extracted from the headers of those packets.

Students have gotten so savvy about how they use their personal technology. What the product was originally intended for is not necessarily what the product will be used for. With this in mind picking which inkjet is the best printer for student or school use should be tempered with the fact that just basic affordable printers are being discussed.

Be careful what you ask for

HP Photosmart C7180 color printer is the top choice by this site. Affordability is in the eye of the beholder, with a price tag ranging from $300-400, but the unit does come off as fairly efficient with a user rating of 6.5. CNET editors gave a 6.8 rating.

HP OfficeJet Pro L7680 is a printer for student use that may be of interest. It is also a multi-function unit. It is rated as second in the CNET rankings but it does appear a bit large for student use. Perhaps if advanced course work dictates a higher printing needs the printers size and cost $300-500 can be justified. This does appear to be agreed upon as its user rating is a scant 5.5 user rating out of ten. CNET editors gave it an 8.2 rating of 10 so perhaps a student that is in grad school may be a better target user.

The Cannon Pixma MP830 may be a good compromise in affordable printers. Its cost starts to get down into the reality of what a student can realistically afford on a budget.

An average $160-333 price tag from over 30 online stores makes this unit look good from the start. Its rating isnt too shabby at 6.6 out of 10 by users and 7.2 by editors.

How to Choose the Best Broadband Internet Access Option

Not so many years ago, accessing the Internet was a one size fits all?technology. When you wanted to surf the web, send and receive emails, post files to a web site, or just play around on AOL, you accessed it all through your telephone line using a modem and a standard dial-up account. Most of us didnt mind because we realized that the slow speeds we endured were shared by everyone else. The notion of Internet speed envy?had yet to emerge.

Well, those days are long gone! Nowadays, in ever-increasing numbers, people are dumping their old dial-up modems and those slow connections for a much faster Internet experience through DSL, cable, and satellite technologies. In 2002, only 21% of Internet users had broadband connections at home. As of late 2005, that number had risen to 53% [Source: Pew Internet & American Life Project].

For the remaining 47% still using dial-up access, its often because they live where DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable technologies are not available. Yes, there are still lots of rural areas that do not have access to either. Among those who do have access to broadband connections, it is most often older and poorer Americans who choose to keep dial-up access.

Which Internet Access Option is Best for You?

You may be wondering which broadband solution is the best option. While much depends on whats available in your area, for many users it comes down to a personal choice, centered on convenience, speed, and cost. Lets examine the various technologies and the relative advantages of each.

Cable Internet Access

Using your homes existing cable television lines, you can get Internet access included for an additional fee. Expect a large speed increase versus dial-up access. In fact, in many cases cable Internet access is the fastest alternative. Installation is usually completed quickly with just one visit from your cable companys technicians. You will also need a cable modem (supplied by the cable company in virtually every instance, but can be purchased separately as well).

Clearly, the biggest advantage of going with cable access is speed. All things being equal, it is the fastest of the three broadband alternatives, with a top speed of 10 Mbps (Megabits per second). Having said that, cable speeds can be substantially reduced if you share a local network with a lot of other subscribers. People living in densely packed areas, or locations where the cable company has a lot of users on the same network, will only realize a fraction of that top speed. Its a good idea to call your cable provider and ask some pointed questions about these issues before you order. Better yet, ask neighbors who have cable Internet what kind of speed they get.

DSL Internet Access

Digital Subscriber Line access utilizes your existing telephone line in an innovative way to greatly increase your Internet speeds. While cable is usually faster, DSL is substantially speedier than traditional dial-up access and offers a much-improved experience for a modest increase in cost. Installation is quick, usually only requiring a simple change at your homes phone box outside of the house by a phone company technician. You will need a DSL modem, which is included at no extra charge by most providers when you sign an extended service contract.

If you live where DSL is not currently available, be patient. Major providers like Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T are spreading their coverage areas quickly. Even many rural areas can expect to have DSL access in the coming months.

The two big advantages of choosing DSL are cost and speed. You will only need to get the modem and follow some simple instructions to configure it. If you agree to a one-year contract with your phone service provider (most major carriers), the modem will cost you nothing. And the service itself is generally in the $15-$40 per month range, making it a good bargain.

Speed is a bit trickier with DSL. It is slower than cable (top speed is about 6 Mbps), and the major providers offer different packages that limit speeds based on the price you pay per month. To further muddy the waters, DSL is whats known as a distance limited?technology. This means that how far you live from the nearest telephone company switching station determines your actual speed. Those living within a few yards will experience the highest speeds, while those at the other end of your street or block may only get half that speed. As with cable, call your local phone provider and ask questions about the various services and what kind of actual speed you can expect based on your exact physical location in relation to the switching station for your street or neighborhood. If you have a next-door neighbor with DSL, ask what his or her experience has been, as yours will probably be very similar.

Satellite Internet Access

Satellite Internet access uses a small mounted dish and group of electronics to send and receive data through satellites orbiting the Earth over the equator. Users must have a clear view of the Southern sky (in the U.S.) from the face of the dish, unobstructed by trees, buildings, and other obstacles. Coaxial cabling connects the outdoor equipment to indoor send-and-receive equipment that then connects to your computer through a standard USB connector or network card.

The major advantage with satellite Internet access is faster connection speeds for people who live where cable and DSL are not available. Users can expect to download data at a rate that is about 10 to 30 times faster than dial-up access. While satellite Internet connections are significantly faster than dial-ups, they are slower than cable and DSL, and should not be the first choice for those who do have cable or DSL available to them. Satellite access is also more expensive than DSL or cable and can suffer outages when the weather turns ugly. Clearly, the other two are better options unless you live where they are not available.

The Bottom Line

Overall, cable and DSL are terrific broadband Internet access solutions for the majority of people who live in urban or suburban locations. Satellite access adds a much-needed alternative for folks living in rural areas, completing the coverage area for the vast majority of America and Canada. While proponents of both cable and DSL have legitimate arguments in favor of their services, deciding between them should be made on an individual basis, determined by the actual speeds and costs for each in your location.

If speed is your top priority and you live where there are not a lot of other users sharing the local cable network, go with cable (especially if your neighbors report high speeds and good service). If not, look into DSL. If cost is your main consideration and speed isnt as important, a lower-end DSL service will probably be a better fit, as long as you dont live too far from the nearest telephone switching station. Finally, if you live in a rural area, satellite Internet access may be right up your alley, especially if you long for faster downloads and web site surfing.

If you do live in a rural area where cable or DSL are not an option then your best bet would be to go with the new WildBlue Satellite System.

What is the best way for me to go about getting high speed internet in my house? I searched on line and through the yellow pages, only to find that there are an uncountable number of high speed internet options out there. However, as I sifted through all of the consumer sites and user reviews, I found that SBC DSL may, indeed, be the best bet for bringing high speed internet to my home office.

According to many a review, SBC DSL is the most reliable DSL service out there. They also happen to be the largest in many major metropolitan areas in the country, or at least those serviced by Southwestern Bell. SBC DSL has a spectacular reputation among consumers for having technologically advanced products, great customer service, and good competitive prices on their service. The only drawback I could find is that several SBC DSL customers found setting up a home network to be difficult. However, by simply converting to wireless internet, you can solve that problem and still have your SBC DSL connection all over your home.

A big advantage of SBC DSL is that in most cases you can get a free modem and setup. Setup can be one of the more frustrating parts of getting high speed internet, especially if you are not technically savvy. Many companies charge a setup fee, so that savings alone can make SBC DSL attractive to you. Installation can be difficult, and there is charge for that. However, if you do it yourself they waive the fee and you will still have access to the very knowledgeable and helpful SBC DSL customer service representatives.

Many high speed and DSL internet companies will not be willing to give you a firm date as to when you can get your connection taken care of. That is another way that SBC DSL is different. Once you place an order you are given an installation date, which is as a general rule about six business days out from when you call. Whilst we all believe that satellites floating around the earth are responsible for the TV and the fact that we can watch the Superbowl in America all the way over the Atlantic in the UK the same cannot be said for the Internet. The Internet is run by an enormous network of copper and Fibre-Optic cables and in order for everyone to be able to connect to the Internet then there is some form of cabling infrastructure in place.

Many of these cables are submarine, in that they run under the water, they are well reinforced with up to nine layers of components to make sure these vital cables don't get disturbed. The problem is the cables running under the Mediterranean have recently become severed, initially one cable joining Egypt and Italy was broken but now a further two have been severed causing global problems, with Broadband Internet service disrupted in some Middle East countries such as Iran, India and Egypt.

The bigger concern was the disruption caused to telecommunications in these countries, especially India which as many people will know is home to thousands of outsourced call centres, BT was quick to re-route their network to deal with this disruption and reports say that although the telephone network quality isn't as clear as normal it is still workable.

The problem is that smaller companies with less comprehensive contingency plans are suffering; Vikas Jain, assistant vice president at AEZ Group, a real estate developer said, "We have a lot of offices connected by the net so because the internet is down means we are cut off from the head office,"

This problem is not the first of its kind, Broadband and other telecommunications in Taiwan were disrupted for months in 2006 after an earthquake managed to destroy 7 of 8 cables connecting to Mainland Asia. The repairs which were expected to last 10 days stretched out to months in order to get back up to speed. With the recent incident repair ships have been dispatched to repair cables before the situation worsens.

The reason for this disruption? Apparently the best guess is that a tanker had dragged its anchor along the sea bed. The repair time is likely to be a week from when the repair ships arrive, whilst the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Egypt said the Broadband services in Egypt would be back up at 80% within 48 hours of the initial breakdown. Hopefully the World Wide Web will be back to strength soon!

For T1 and T3 (aka DS3) business connectivity.....how do you decide who offers the best package of bandwidth and network performance for the money?

A T1 (or T3) by any other name or even the same name, may not be the same. There is so much more to it than "just" getting a T1 (or T3).

First, no matter who you buy your T1 from, most likely the actual circuit (loop, UNE, copper, ...) will be provided by the Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier, (ILEC) which is the RBOC, a Baby Bell in most areas (in the US). Might be Pac Bell, now SBC, er... AT&T (can sure get confusing). But any area with any amount of B&I will have a number of Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC), other competitive phone companies. And they are not all the same in their services. They may all offer a T1, but there can be BIG differences.

Look at the contracts offered. A T1 is 1.544M of bandwidth. One contract may state that if you actually use the full bandwidth regularly, they will increase your rate. Another one may state that if the full bandwidth is not available at any time 24x7 you get a rebate. BIG difference. Some will go even further and provide specs on things like packet loss and latency letting you know not only how fast, but how good. Be sure to check SLA's (Service Level Agreements).

Many of the smaller CLECs may have the ability to connect locally to the ILEC and sell you a T1. But how much bandwidth do they own? Some business models allow for a 10 to 1 ratio of sold bandwidth to owned bandwidth. This is guessing that only one out of ten of their users will want to actually use their bandwidth at any time. Others actually have their own "above net" fiber. This way they can haul your traffic above the congestion of the regular Internet to a more local peering point. At the extreme top end of providers, they can guaranty data transfer rates to points around the world.

Dedicated Internet, Voice or WAN availability depends on the exact address of the service location.

For a T3 (aka DS3) connection, this can be very expensive to implement. You might first want to see if the building you're in already has any fiber connectivity going into it. If the buliding is new or was part of the 2000 boom they might have some fiber already in the building. Then all you would need to do is find out who the fiber belongs to and pay to light up the line.

T1 and T3/DS3 are not distance limited, but they can be expensive for rural or hard to reach locations. DSL is limited to 12-18K feet and Ethernet over Copper (EoC) to 9K feet from your service address to the closest DSL or EoC equipped Central Office. Cable Internet and fiber providers must already be in your building to provide service --although, they may extend cable/fiber if there are multiple tenant prospects.

Most T1 and Ethernet over Copper providers buy building access (copper pairs or loops) from the local exchange carrier (LEC). If you have a T1 order in process (with any provider), and are experiencing an extended install delay, chances are that the LEC has facilities issues in the area (not enough copper pairs, fiber, cross-connects, etc.) In this case, you can either wait for the LEC to resolve the issue, or order new service from a provider that doesn't use the LEC access network (e.g., cable, fiber or wireless.)

Throw in the options of MPLS, Fiber, Gigabit Ethernet, and Metro Ethernet....and making a decision can get even more confusing.

However, no matter direction you go in you'll want to do a thorough comparison of all available providers to make sure you get the best combination of bandwidth, cost, SLA, QoS, etc to meet your application requirements.

Whatever that solution is it can be pretty time and effort intensive to contact every potential provider in the area individually.....compare, negotiate, decide, do the paperwork, etc.

When would YOU choose DSL, T1, or DS3 Bandwidth as the network solution for your business .... and why/why not? What are the pros and cons for and against each bandwidth type in a business setting?

In general .....

The answer to these questions is truly related to your application requirements. If you run applications that are latency or Jitter impacted, then DSL may not provide you with the service levels you need.

An additional extension of that would be your requirements for uptime. MTTR (Mean Time to Repair) is typically greatly improved with DS1 and DS3 circuits.

The size of the business is not nearly as important as your application requirements. Many large organizations can survive with DSL or in some cases dial-up, but a small organization that has streaming application traffic, mission critical traffic, or small latency or jitter requirements then DS1 or greater connectivity would be required.

Lastly, though often primarily, cost helps determine your choices.

To be more specific ....

T1s and DS-3s give the same offering except for capacity. T1s give 1.5Mbps upload and download speeds per line. DS3s give 32-45mbps upload and download speeds.

ADSL typically give asymmetric upload and download speeds (ADSL) typically 1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 Mbps download speeds and somewhere between 128 -768Mbps upload speeds.

Symmetrical DSL (SDSL) gives the same upload and download speeds, typically 384, 512 or 786Mbps upload and download.

Cable offerings vary with providers and location. Doing a comparison with cable would be impossible without knowing your provider and market. Not who your provider is and your location .... but knowing how your provider is in that particular market. Ask a local expert for that detail.

T1 and DS3 are very reliable with high MTBF (mean time between failure) and low MTTR (mean time to repair). Cable and DSL on the other side.

T1 and DS3 expensive, Cable and DSL more affordable.

If you do not have a need for high upload speeds, (VPN, VoIP, high Data transfer for backup/co-location, ftp streaming media or other high bandwidth services hosted in-house, etc) then an asymmetric connection is not evil. DSL/Cable may be a good choice in that case.

If you need high speed upload then T1/DS3 is needed.

Fro growing needs, T1 or fractional T3 is a good choice. After some point in growth, a full T3/DS3 becomes more economical.

For mission critical networks, two providers from two different physical points-of-entry may be necessary depending on the natural disasters you are likely to face.

Case study one: a company had a fractional T3 coming in from the East and another fractional T3 coming in from the West. Flooding and a sinkhole cut one T3. The network slowed down but stayed up.

Case study two: a company in South Florida lost its T1s and failed over to a Satellite link. Certain services were crippled by the latency of the system but their mission-critical applications kept running.

Which brings us to Satellite: usually asymmetric with extremely fast downloads (depending on service level) but typically slow uploads (but varies depending on service level). Has an intrinsic latency due to the speed of light and the distance of satellites. Advantage: natural disaster resistant, reliable, available everywhere and no last-mile issues.

In short...here's the 3 most important factors to consider.....

1- Link Speed and Committed Rate

T1 or DS3 can be purchased as dedicated point to point bandwidth. You will get the advertised speed guaranteed from point a to point b. KEY POINT if you are purchasing access to the internet and using the Internet to provide connectivity (VPN etc) then you are buying an on-ramp, the traffic on the "highway" after you get on could slow you down. Just because you bought a DS3 to the Internet doesn't mean that you will have DS3 access to everything onthe Internet.

2- Link Symmetry

T1 and DS3 give the same bandwidth in both directions when configured as point to point. Different flavors of DSL provide different up and downlink speeds.

3- QOS

T1 and DS3 are configurable to support TDM voice (straight out of your PBX). They can also support VoIP. If you are doing everything with VoIP it may not matter. If you are keeping some TDM voice it matters a lot.

Two Enter Internet Battle

Consumers understand that when there is more competition in a market, there are lower prices. This is especially true in the computer industry where it is reported that 68% of households have a computer. According to the Computer Industry Almanac, the worldwide number of Internet users will exceed 1 billion this year with the United States leading with over 185 million users. The number of users will continue to increase as well as competitors, forcing companies to offer faster connections at a cheaper price. Two technologies that will lend a hand in allowing new players into the Broadband market are BPL and WIMAX.
Broadband Over Power Lines, BPL
BPL is a technology that allows Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines and is also referred to as Power-line Communications or PLC. The technology works by modulating high-frequency radio waves with the digital signals from the Internet. These radio waves are fed into the utility grid at specific points, then travel along the wires and pass through the utility transformers into homes and businesses. One main concern by officials in the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), is that BPL will interfere with radio systems including fire, police, short-wave and land mobile. There are other groups who are taking the initiative in realizing this potential including the IEEE which has begun to develop IEEE P1675, "Standard for Broadband over Power Line Hardware."
This technology has gained national attention with reports by the Wall Street Journal that industry powerhouses Google and Goldman Sachs have invested nearly $100 million into Current Communications Group, a company that provides high-speed Internet access over electrical power lines. According to Reuters, CCG will use the financing to deploy voice, video and data services in domestic and global markets. IBM is also currently researching the use of electrical power lines to provide internet access by opening a BPL center in Houston with CenterPoint Energy although IBM has declined to put a dollar value on the amount invested.
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, WIMAX
WiMAX, also known as IEEE 802.16, is a standards-based wireless technology that provides broadband connections over long distances and is intended for wireless metropolitan area networks". It can be used for wireless networking in much the same way WiFi is used today while also allowing for more efficient bandwidth use and interference avoidance. WiMAX has a broadband wireless access range of 30 miles compared to only 100 ?300 feet for a WiFi wireless local area network.
WiMAX can be used for a number of applications, including "last mile" broadband connections, hotspots, and high-speed connectivity for businesses. Alvarion, a global organization headquartered in Israel that supplies integrated Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) solutions, has announced it will supply satellite provider DirecTV Group Inc. with equipment that uses WIMAX technology in order to enhance customer upstream bandwidth requirements. By implementing last mile?broadband connections, DirecTV would then be able to supply faster connections to rural areas where it would cost millions to lay down the cable lines necessary for high speed. Another application under consideration is gaming. Microsoft is looking to make WiMax a standard feature in its Xbox 360. This would allow gamers with similar equipment to interact with other players without any internet access. All the funcionality of WiFi with improved range and reduced network latency makes WiMAX a very attractive alternative.

SHDSL -- Why Hasn't It Replaced SDSL?

Are you frustrated by the pace of connectivity improvements? For how many years has (small) business been stuck with SDSL for affordable connectivity?

SHDSL was supposed to supplant SDSL as of 2003 (or so) I thought, but I never see advertised speeds go beyond a 1.5 Mbps SDSL line... SHDSL goes to 2.3 Mbps and has other advantages over SDSL (longer loop lengths for given speeds, less interference with other data lines, 4-wire mode). I'm not that well educated on the topic, but I also had the impression there could be some cost savings.

Today T1's are often delivered using this technology, but why not offer SHDSL from the customer to DSLAM like a normal dedicated DSL line.... and give customers the speed they want, distance depending???

Are ISPs just not ready to upgrade their DSLAM equipment, or don't want to cannibalize their higher priced bonded T1 services?

You may not need the SLA of a real T1, but you'd sure love 2.3 Mbps up and down for let's say $150/mo or so.

First.... you have to look at who is selling SDSL. Basically Covad and a few small CLECs. They bought non-standards-based SDSL long ago and they are still using the equipment.

Given the financial state of Covad I can see why they aren't going around ripping out all their DSLAMs.

There may be some hope though, with the new Earthlink money they are upgrading DSLAMs to support LPV and ADSL2 in larger markets. I *think* that the new DSLAMs will also be offering new SDSL speeds as well, which probably means SHDSL (and finally the ability to hook a real router up to an SDSL line).

Most DS-1s today are delivered using either HDSL or HDSL2 on 1 or 2 pairs.

Your ILECs aren't going to upgrade equipment necessarily because of the availability of a different technology. Even with existing technology many consumers and businesses are in a fight just to be able to get ADSL services.

Covad, XO, etc. that are selling SDSL services already may not upgrade given their investment in existing equipment.... and given the state of competition now for internet services.

With the price of service dropping to $12.99/mo and the uptake of those discounted services increasing, I wouldn't want to be one of the other players and be making large capital expenditures for upgrades right now. I'd be worried about staying in business. People are price driven.....

Just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth.

Why Am I Getting Low Speed Results On My Broadband Test?

You may have already run a few tests and found that even though you are paying for, say, an 8 Mb package, you're actual broadband speed test results are much slower.

Firstly, when your Internet Service Provider advertised your, for example, 8 Mb package what they meant was that your optimum speed was 8 Mb. That means that barring any interference between your PC and your router, distance from the exchange, line quality, applications running on your PC, and of course your contention ratio, that you should theoretically get speeds of 8 Mb.

With ADSL broadband an important factor in determining your highest speed is how close you are to your local exchange. Some broadband availability checkers will also have a Show Map section that you can click. This will show you how close you are to the exchange. The further you are, the slower your connection will be. If you have a great quality line this difference may be negligible i.e. you may get 20 Mb speeds rather than 24 Mb speeds but who really needs broadband that fast anyway unless you are a business or an online gaming addict.

On the other hand if you are reasonably close to the exchange but you are still getting slow speeds, another factor to look at is the actual broadband package you are subscribing to. You may have been early to jump on the broadband wagon but now still have a 512 Kbps connection, the common connection a few years ago. However since then we have seen broadband speeds of up to 24Mb. Definitely investigate a package upgrade, as these days you can affordable get double and triple those early speeds.

Another factor is your contention ratio. Between you and the exchange there will be a number of houses connecting to broadband using the same network connection and this number will affect the speeds you receive. So for instance if you have a contention ratio of about 40:1 which is average, this means that 40 people share that bandwidth. Businesses often pay for lower contention rates of 20:1 and 10:1 so that their connection is always as fast as possible. Often your slow speeds are caused by having a high contention ratio.

You can improve your broadband test results by either getting a better package with your service provider, or just by contacting them and asking them to look for any faults in the line. Also make sure that your PC has a decent chunk of memory free. If you are right up to the brim you will find your internet is very slow. Also make sure the path between your router, if wireless, and your PC is as clear as possible, as the more objects between them the more interference there will be with the speed. There is also software available that will help boost your connection like ONSPEED.

Distance Restrictions In Rural Applications - DSL vs T1

Here's a question often asked by those in rural areas needing dedicated bandwidth for their network applications.

"If someone wanted to have a T-1 line (or fractional T-1) installed in a very rural location, are they subject to the same distance restrictions as a DSL line is?"

The general answer is no. T1's do not have maximum distance "limitation" as does DSL. Network carriers can use multiple T1 repeaters to regenerate (not just amplify) the T1 signal.

However, 2 distance "sensitive" components can increase T1 cost.

First, the T1 access loop. Most local exchange carriers (LECs) (e.g., AT&T/SBC/BellSouth, Qwest and Verizon) charge the ISP for T1 access based on distance between the ISP's router (Internet POP) and the customer's local serving exchange (LEC Central Office.) That is why most ISP's T1 quote tools require the customers local phone number, or at least the 1st 6-digits (NPA-NXX) which identify the local CO exchange, in order to caculate the distance to the ISP's closest IP POP (Internet router).

Second, extrordinary construction costs. If the customer location is a great distance from the closest T1-equipped LEC central office, then the LEC must install additional T1 repeaters and possibly incur other transmission equipment / construction costs to reach the customer. In this case, the LEC has 2 options to deal with construction cost: either absorb cost themselves, or pass it on to the ISP who then pass it on to the end-user customer. I've been implementing T1s for awhile and have seen this situation a few times. Twice the one-time construction costs were $10-$20K and the customer canceled the order. Once, BellSouth had to trench ~200 feet to lay new cable and they absorbed this cost.

Assuming no extrordinary construction cost, there are ISPs that offer flat rate Internet T1s for $750 per month, anywhere in US, with no distance limitations between ISP POP and customer's serving CO. The flat rate cost includes T1 access loop and 1.5 Mbps Internet port. In the majority of cases these aren't always the most reliable providers when you consider long term stability, QoS, and SLA though.

However, for most locatons that are under 25 miles to the ISP POP, we are seeing Internet T1 prices in the general range of $300-$500 per month +/-.

The upside is that it's full speed in both directions, and not subject to the EULA restrictions that DSL lines are. Typically, ISP's don't want you running services behind a DSL line, no such problem with the T1.

Building a Wireless ISP Network... The Opportunity

In the US, most of the people have one or more broadband access services to choose from - variations of DSL from multiple vendors and cable. That is if you're in a metropolitan area. For more rural locations your choices are limited.....if you have any at all. Therein lies an opportunity for those willing to pursue it.

In the rural areas of the country, the selection is limited. Satellite is available to anyone (at high cost), but between dial up and T1 there are no options for many residents. Satellite suffers from latency, making it unsuitable for VoIP and some other real time Internet services. Some applications that should not be sensitive to latency (email, Web forms) will perform poorly or fail due to the increased packet time.

The traditional carriers (RBOC) and resellers face a cost issue in bringing broadband service to outlying areas. Without a concentration of users the per user cost at published rates causes either a poor or negative margin. The way cost accounting is done in larger corporations makes the business case worse for a large carrier. Cost allocations between departments for such things as floor space, personnel, and backend support end up as added costs rather than leverage opportunities. Traditional wired service will not reach outlying residents unless mandated by law, and the trend is against this happening in the near future.

So the opportunity is open for a business offering Internet broadband access service to outlying residents.

Therein lies a tremendous opportunity.

Now....just how do you go about taking advantage of this opportunity, filling a need, and building a wireless ISP network?

To assist you with working through the planning and execution of this effort here are some insights and resources you should consider:

* Business Continuity Planning - This isn't the technical side of the business, the backup systems, redundant pathing, fail-over and restore, or alternate location stuff. Here you're looking at subjects such as Legal Structure, Personnel Insurance, Asset Insurance, and Process and Procedure.

* Revenue and Profit - Covers where and how to create your income including installation, basic monthly service, custom access service, volume or corporate pricing, other services, business partnerships, usage based service, civic service, and tower leasing (or you could build and provide your own).

* Security Issues - There's much to consider in this arena. Don't overlook it.

* Bandwidth issues - The access line to your tower(s) is likely the critical factor to success. Whether it's a T1 or a DS3 line. First off, it probably represents your single largest operational cost. Next, it determines the maximum quality of service you can provide.

Quotes you receive for bandwidth will probably be very different in terms of cost and performance guarantees, and should cover Performance Standards, Service Availability, Mean Time to Respond, Mean Time to Repair, Latency, Packet Loss, and Jitter. When deciding on which ISP plan is right for you, there are two main factors to consider: your needs and your budget. You want to purchase the most affordable plan that can handle everything you want to accomplish on the internet.

There are three main types of ISP plans to choose from: Dial-Up, DSL and Cable. Each of these three plan types download internet pages and files at different speeds. The fastest is a Cable (around 1000 kilobits per second) connection followed by DSL (around 300 kilobits per second) and Dial-Up (around 30 kilobits per second), respectively. If you are planning on only using the internet for email and surfing web pages, a Dial-Up plan would be perfect for you. Dial-Up is also the cheapest of the three followed by DSL and Cable, respectively. However, if you are planning on purchasing a membership at a movie or music download website that lets you download unlimited movies or music per month, you will want a DSL or Cable connection so you can take advantage of the offer.

Tracfone LG CG225 - Is This The Best Tracfone Camera Phone?

The New LG CG225 GSM Camera phone is the first Tracfone folding camera phone available. This phone works on the GSM networks of AT&T and or T-Mobile. Previously the Motorola C261 which is a candy bar style phone was the only camera phone available. If AT&T does not have service in your area then this phone will not be offered in your area.

Half price Minutes all the Time

The "Double Minute Card" from Tracfone is normally $50. The LG 225 comes with the Doubler card already installed. This cuts the comparable price of your phone to under $30. This cuts the cost of minutes on your new phone in half. If you buy $30 cards you normally get 120 minutes. This is doubled with on this phone so you are getting 240 minutes.

Tracfone is a MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which means it does not own its own network. They buy minutes from all the major cell phone networks like Alltel, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile instead of building it's own cellular network. They have over six million customers in the US.

Sending Pictures

When you are using this phone in the AT&T area you can send pictures. If you are roaming with this phone you cannot send or receive pictures. You can still take them as long as your memory is not full.

The LG 225 is a Single Rate Phone

Roaming, long distance, and even International Long distance is the same rate, one unit per minute, as local calls with this Single Rate Tracfones. The older phones charged two units per minute when you were roaming. This varies from phone model to phone model but almost all of the newer phones available are single rate.

Web Access

This phone can be used for web access as long as you are in AT&T coverage area. If you are not in AT&T coverage area you will not be able to use the web access on this phone. Tracfone allows web access of a very small slice of the internet.

How does a Tracfone work?

They have a simple Prepaid Phone Plan. You buy the phone and then you buy phone cards either from their website, the phone, or almost any retail store like Safeway, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Best-Buy. Each phone card gives you minutes and network activity time. For example the $30 one hundred and twenty minute card gives you 90 days of activity time. The 225 phone gets 240 minutes from these cards because of the doubler feature. Before you run out of minutes or activity time you need to add another card. Tracfone tells you right on the screen of your phone how many minutes you have left and how long your phone will stay active.

What does a Tracfone cost to use?

Minutes cost between twenty cents and forty cents each unless you have a doubler card. Then minutes cost between ten and twenty cents each. As you buy in bigger amounts you get cheaper minutes. This is the only Tracfone that comes with the doubler card which gets you half price minutes all the time. Minutes for this phone will cost between 10 and 20 cents depending on the size card you buy.

Available Nationwide

Tracfone is the only cell phone supplier that offers phones for sale in every zip code in the United States. They have deals with most of the major cell companies to buy minutes on their networks. Tracfone and NET10 are the only Prepaid cell phones that can roam to different Cellular Networks. All of the other Prepaid phones from Verizon, T-Mobile, Alltel will only work on one network or if they do allow roaming it will cost over 60 cents a minute.

Tracfone LG CG225 Review

This is the best quality phone that Tracfone has released so far. The Motorola W370 is a nice phone also but it does not come with a camera. I have found the camera feature handy even though I almost never send photos. I like taking pictures and having them on my phone.
